ceramic figure by Sara Swink
Little Homesteader
About 6" tall
2014

This piece is a maquette—a clay sketch—for the large version of "Homesteader" (see it under Available Work). The idea for the piece came from a collage image of a man leaning on a staff. He looked like he was rooted into the ground, as if to say, this is it; this is where I live. Perhaps he was too weary to look for another place or maybe he surrendered. Sometimes that's what home is: it's simply the place you end up. It's finally being at home with yourself just the way you are with all your imperfections. The headpiece he's wearing here is part of how he's decorated himself. I added the wooden stick later; it's painted with acrylic paint.

SOLD to Ben in Texas.
